No Eclipse Viewing at the St. Clair Airport

St. Clair officials are getting the word out that the city’s airport will not be available for use as an eclipse viewing site on August 21st.  This decision was reached after the city was informed that the Federal Aviation Administration has taken a national approach to keep airports open on that day for aeronautical purposes.   The FAA also notified the city that if it were to close the airport without approval, it would prompt an ensuing investigation and reports, along with a guaranteed delay in final closure of the airport.   City officials agreed that the liability and restrictions involved in keeping the airport open to both air traffic and to an eclipse viewing crowd is neither safe nor viable.    The city staff is placing a sign at the airport that it will not be a public viewing site.  Staff will also be stationed along the roadside with maps to help direct the public to alternate viewing sites.    In a letter to the media, city officials express confidence the final airport closure will take place in November as planned, a process which has literally taken years.
