Nine-Year Old Boy Injured in Accidental Shooting

The Franklin County Sheriff’s office and the Missouri Department of Conservation are investigating an accidental shooting of a nine-year old boy near Berger.  The incident occurred at around 9 am on Sunday in the 1,000 block of Sauer Ford Road near Berger.  A Franklin County Deputy, along with members of the New Haven-Berger Volunteer Fire Department and the Hermann Ambulance District responded to the incident.  Upon arrival first responders found the boy had suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his right shoulder.  During further investigation the deputy discovered the boy had been up in a tree stand, deer hunting with a 20 gauge shotgun.  His father and a family friend were with him at the time of the incident.  The shooting occurred when the boy attempted to exit the tree stand.  The boy attempted to hand the shotgun down to his father’s friend.  During this process the butt end of the gun struck a rung in the tree stand ladder causing it to discharge a slug round into the boy’s shoulder.  The boy was transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for treatment of his wound.
