Over 6,000 Homes and Businesses in Franklin County Could Receive High-Speed Internet

Rural residents and businesses in Franklin County could be set to receive high-speed internet service in the near future.  Homes and businesses in unserved areas of Missouri are eligible for financial support from the next phase of the Federal Communication Commission’s Connect America Fund, which would help offset the high cost of extending broadband service into rural areas.  The FCC will be distributing these funds through an innovative reverse auction scheduled to take place on July 24th.  Providers nationwide will compete for up $2-billion in support to expand access to broadband to nearly one-million homes and businesses.  The application period for providers seeking to participate in the auction will run from March 19th through the 30th.  The results of this auction will likely have a major impact on rural residents in the area.  In Franklin County 6,725 areas would be eligible for broadband service, which is the largest of any county in the state.  Jefferson County ranks second overall with 5,508 areas eligible.  Washington County was the next local county to see a significant impact, with 1,542 areas eligible.
