Washington School District Employee Facing Multiple Charges Following Incident

A Washington School District employee is facing multiple charges. The suspect, 33-year old Thomas Wingfield of Union has been charged with possession of marijuana following an investigation of his residence in Union.  He is also facing charges of unlawful use of a weapon and shoplifting in St. Charles County.  Wingfield was arrested on Wednesday night by O’Fallon police after he was caught stealing from a convenience store.  During the evening Wingfield had also flourished a handgun at a stranded motorist on Interstate 70.  Upon his arrest Washington police were notified.  In turn, Washington police notified the Washington School District, which led to the cancellation of classes on Thursday.  District officials had raised concerns about Wingfield mental condition.  This led to Wingfield being placed on paid administrative leave on Wednesday. Concerns were further raised Wednesday night when a witness told O’Fallon police Wingfield had said there was going to be a lot of shooting at 7 am.  Further investigation revealed the comment was related to planned target shooting with friends and family of Wingfield.  Wingfield is currently being held at the O’Fallon Police Department.  The investigation into Wingfield’s actions is being conducted by the Washington Police Department, Union, Police Department, O’Fallon Police Department, Missouri Highway Patrol, and the Multi-County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Enforcement Unit.
